Checkout Trainer Rules - How to Play

Checkout Trainer is a solo finishing drill. You get a random checkout score and try to finish it exactly within a set number of darts. Unlike 121 Checkout, the targets don’t climb a ladder. Each one is drawn at random from a range you choose, so you practise the finishes that come up in real games.

How to play

  1. You get a random checkout target, such as 81.
  2. Throw up to 3 darts to score it down to exactly zero, counting down as in X01.
  3. With the standard double-out rule, your last dart must be a double. The bullseye counts as a double, .
  4. Going below zero, leaving 1, or reaching zero without a double is a bust. The attempt ends and any darts left are lost.
  5. If you bust or run out of darts, start a new attempt on the same target from the full score.
  6. Once you check out, move on to the next target.
  7. Play a set number of checkouts, such as 10, or keep going until you stop.

Every target in the range comes up once before any repeats. Only scores you can finish with your darts are used, so with 3 darts and a double out, 159, 162, 163, 165, 166, 168, and 169 never come up.

For finishing routes, use the darts checkout calculator.

How to measure progress

Count the attempts each checkout takes. Finishing on the first attempt is the goal. Over a session, track your first-attempt rate, your average darts per checkout, your highest checkout, and the target that took the most attempts.

Straight Out accepts any finishing dart, Double Out needs a double, and Master Out accepts a double or a triple. With fewer darts per attempt, only scores you can finish in that many darts are used, so Advanced is unavailable with 1 dart. Checkout suggestions show a finishing route for the score you have left.

Checkout Trainer is a solo drill, so it has no bots, legs, or sets. You can end a session at any time. At the end, DartsOn shows your checkouts, attempts, first-attempt rate, average darts per checkout, best checkout, and hardest checkout.

Stats tracked in DartsOn

At the end of each session, DartsOn shows:

Stat What it shows
Checkouts Targets checked out, for example 7 of 10 in a fixed-length session.
Total Attempts Attempts across every target, including busts and attempts that ran out of darts.
First Attempt Rate The share of checkouts made on the first attempt.
Avg Darts / Checkout Darts thrown per checked-out target, counting every attempt at it.
Best Checkout The highest target checked out.
Hardest Checkout The target that took the most attempts.
Session Duration How long the session lasted.

A detailed tab lists every target with its attempts and darts, and marks any target left unfinished when the session ended as skipped.

Checkout Trainer FAQ

How is Checkout Trainer different from 121 Checkout?

121 Checkout climbs a ladder: each success raises the next target, and a failure sends you back to your Safehouse. Checkout Trainer draws random scores from the range you choose, so you practise a spread of finishes. Each target stays until you check it out.

What happens if you bust in Checkout Trainer?

The attempt ends and any darts left are lost. You start a new attempt on the same target from the full score. There is no limit on attempts.

Which checkout scores come up in Checkout Trainer?

Only scores you can finish with your darts under the ending rule. With 3 darts and a double out, that is every score from 2 to 170 except 159, 162, 163, 165, 166, 168, and 169. Each score in your range comes up once before any repeats.

Can you practise checkouts without a double out?

Yes. DartsOn offers Straight Out, where any dart can finish, and Master Out, where a double or a triple finishes, as well as the default Double Out.

What does DartsOn track in Checkout Trainer?

At the end of each session it shows your checkouts, total attempts, first-attempt rate, average darts per checkout, best checkout, and hardest checkout, with a target-by-target breakdown.
